Who would have thought I’d end up caring for a dog, let alone an Alaskan Malamute? It’s been a journey of unexpected joy and learning.

Lucky is an enormous four-year-old Alaskan Malamute. Due to his size, many people are afraid of him. However, he fears other dogs, especially smaller ones, and prefers being around humans. I have tried to have Lucky socialise with other dogs, but he always “cries” when he faces them. I am still trying to figure out what to do except to have him socialise with more dogs.

At first, I was hesitant to take care of him since I had no experience. Fortunately, Lucky is extremely friendly; he does not bark or bite (he sometimes bites, but those are fun bites, not proper ones). He always welcomes me by “talking” when I reach his place.

Lucky is now very famous in the neighbourhood. Every time I walk him, someone asks to take photos. Lucky also loves to meet new people, so it is a win-win. My mum does not even like dogs, but Lucky is the only exception since he is exceptionally obedient. At first, he only understood Mandarin (because the owner is Chinese), but after our training, he understood Mandarin and English. What a good boy.

Unfortunately, his story so far has been quite awful. When he was younger, he never socialised with other dogs. This year is the first time he has explored the outer environment. He mostly stays in the house doing nothing. The opposite neighbour’s dog constantly barks at him, and Lucky hates that particular dog. Now, the owner is selling the house and has abandoned Lucky. Thankfully, I am still around to care for him.

My mum and I wish to be Lucky’s owner, but we know we cannot fully commit to him. We want Lucky’s next owner to be perfect because he is such a good boy. We are handpicking the best owner for him. Till then, we will enjoy his company as much as possible.

Baby Lucky!
