2023 was one of the worst years I’ve ever had; I literally hit rock bottom last year. So 2024 can’t be any worse, right?
I got a job at the start of 2024, so it was going well. Although the job is different from what I wanted, beggars can’t be choosers. I just need the momentum to be better. Since I know how I want to progress my career, need to find a suitable job. However, I would still like to continue my current work as I am improving my soft skills, such as designing posts and brainstorming, and I am delighted that the company gives me lots of freedom to work.
Healthwise, it is getting better and has grown almost exponentially since July. A new 24-hour gym opened near my house this July, and I got a special offer as an early bird. Since it is 24 hours, I can avoid the crowd and work in a piece at any time. Another factor that massively boosts my health is my diet. I truly realise the 80-20 rules in fitness. 20% of your fitness comes from the gym, and 80% from your food. I avoid processed foods like the plague and only opt for home-cooked food if possible. When eating out, I choose restaurants that serve “normal” food, i.e. not processed food, such as McDonald’s or KFC. I lost 5-7kg in 6 months, a massive achievement. Looking back, I am pleased with my progress, from a failing liver in Japan in 2023 to gaining muscle and losing so much visceral fat that I can wear back my old pants.
Another good habit I slowly build up throughout the year is reading. I have always liked to read, but these recent years have really hit me hard, and I stopped reading. Thus, being able to read and learn new knowledge feels refreshing again. I like reading non-friction books, and now, I try to read some books written in Chinese to brush up my language.
In 2024, I promised myself to write one blog post per week. I didn’t achieve that goal, but I managed to revive my blog and publish posts frequently, which is a significant improvement. I am running out of topics to write about, but don’t worry—I will make sure to do more activities so I have more things to write about! I enquired about doing a stress and rescue diving course, so I am sure I will write some blog posts about it.
However, the most surprising achievement is getting over FOMO. I didn’t make a detailed plan on how to get over FOMO, but somehow, for some reason, I don’t feel FOMO anymore. Even when some of my associates constantly go to Maldives or other places to dive, I don’t feel any envy or jealousy. In contrast, when one of my friends got a job in London, instead of FOMO, I congratulated her. I wished her all the best, unlike one of her ex-colleagues who basically “interrogated” her on how she found a new job in London and stalked her and her friends’ social media. We are still in contact now. I somehow got over FOMO because I have identified a direction in my life; I know what to do and how to maximise my chances. It is true: an aimless man is worse than a dead man. He needs an identity; he needs his honour to live on.
Obviously, there are many things I still need to improve on, and I don’t think 2024 is impressive, but compared to 2023, it’s alright so far.
