Greenwich is well-known for its maritime history, and this is where Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) was named after. The iconic location of Greenwich is the Royal Observatory. I booked for tickets to the observatory and other museums.
It was a long journey from my house as Greenwich is located at Zone 2/3. It was very early in the morning, and there were very few people. I could enjoy the fresh air while walking alone in the park. Some children were playing around with leaves while couples were taking a stroll around Greenwich Park. I was sitting on the bench for a while before heading toward the Royal Observatory. The view of London from the Royal Observatory is magnificent.
The Royal Observatory starts with a history of maritime and the competition between nations to find a suitable device that tells time while on naval duty. Later, you will walk into the main housing for all the past astronomers that lived there. You could see a range of telescopes that were being used in the past and the present. Perhaps the main highlight of this site is the meridian line which is longitude 0º, a standard measurement for all countries around the world.
After this, I went to the National Maritime Museum. Although the museum was closed, they had opened a temporary exhibition on the photographies of natural phenomenon and outer space. Both amateurs and professionals had taken part in this competition, and every single photo was unique. Viewing these photos had brought me back to my Iceland days, and I missed it so much. Mark my word, I will go back to Iceland! I loved those photos so much that I had decided to buy a book that has all the contestants’ pictures. It was half price off too, so not a bad deal.
For lunch, I went to a local Vietnamese restaurant. It was surprisingly yummy, and the price was relatively low as well. I was in a good mood, and for whatever reason, I hopped onto the Emirate cable car (Well the official name is Emirate Air Line) for a round trip. That day was a bit cloudy, though, so I could not fully enjoy the scenery. Nevertheless, it was quite lovely to sit in a cable car, only if I have someone with me.
